Can I Wear a Mouthguard with Invisalign? Options for Sports Protection

You want to start your Invisalign treatment, but you also play sports that can have a damaging impact on your teeth. At this point, maybe you are not sure if the protection you are using is compatible with the Invisalign.

In this article, we will explain how it works and what you can do to continue enjoying your activities. 

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that corrects teeth alignment issues. A plastic tray is placed on your teeth (upper, lower, or both), and it will apply the necessary pressure to bring the teeth to the correct position. 

These trays can be taken out, but you need to wear them between 20 and 22 hours per day to make sure the treatment is effective.

These trays will be changed regularly as the treatment progresses.

Can You Wear a Mouthguard with Invisalign?

Both mouthguard and Invisalign have a similar system that covers your teeth. Invisalign covers the teeth, pressuring them into the correct alignment, and mouthguards cup the teeth working as cushions in case of impact during contact sports. 

Since they are used in the same way, wearing them together is not compatible. They would not fit, and if they did, they would look very bulky and be very uncomfortable.

Since you need to wear your Invisalign at least 20 hours a day, you can take them off when you need to wear a mouthguard.

As the treatment progresses, your mouthguard needs to be readjusted to the new alignment of your teeth so that it fits perfectly. 

There are three mouthguards available, and you can choose the one that fits your needs the best:

• Custom Mouthguards
• SISU Mouthguards
• Boil and bite mouthguard

It is important to wear a mouthguard when playing certain sports to avoid dangerous injuries to your teeth and jaw.
